Last Under the Sun : Fast Chaotic Hardcore Punk Rock from Birmingham England.

Artist Information

Biography

Last under The Sun was put together in Birmingham by Mark Badger in 2000. The band has had several line up changes over the years and Mark remains the only one who has been in every line up.

Last under the Sun played its first gig on 9th October 2001, at Manhattens, Hereford, UK with Eggraid and Redshift. The band is based in Birmingham and plays a mixture of punk and hardcore. The band has played all over the place gigging up and down England, Wales and Scotland and in 2004 and 2005 the band went to mainland Europe visiting Holland, Belgium, France and Germany with Sensa Yuma. At the start of 2008 the band ended up working with Pid and Chris and toured Europe as half of the new line up of a reformed Police Bastard.

Last under The Sun found a new drummer in 2008 called Simon (ex-Rivers Edge and current Police Bastard stick man), and the band has started to work on new material and all the rest. The band hope to release some new recordings in 2009 and tour Europe next.

A good friend of the band called Mad Pete has put together a video for "Reversa" and "Summers Day" from the album "Gone" which was recorded in 2005 and has used music by Last Under the Sun for a short film called DIVIDERS.

LAST UNDER THE SUN- 'All Empires Crumble' CD
Terrorizer Magazine 2005
This Brummie trio have apparently been working closely with the Stirchley Stop The War group since their inception in 2001, so it seems only fitting that their new CDEP be a focused, uncompromising attack on callous warmongers everywhere. Musically they sound like a tight-as-arseholes reincarnation of the English Dogs when they had Stu Pid fronting them; this is classic anarcho punk, in that the importance of the message being delivered utterly eclipses the medium that delivers it. Peace out! - Ian Glasper

LAST UNDER THE SUN- 'WINDFALL' CD
No Front Teeth
This actually reminds me of a heavier, more commanding NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN which is a compliment, because they were a really unique band who were so important and it's fantastic to hear that sound again but in this completely different realm. Melodic hardcore can be pretty boring if it's not approached correctly and LAST UNDER THE SUN have created their own approach that works like a charm.

LAST UNDER THE SUN- 'WINDFALL' CD
Black Velvet
There might be just eight tracks to grapple with, but the quality of the music more than outweighs the accompanying quantity as the harsh riffage of 'Threads' hears this Birmingham-based trio pummel into a severely attention-demanding strain of punk hardcore with a definitive melodic edge.

Bizarrely, the actual line-up of the band is being kept secret and band members - allegedly - always seem subject to change a line-up that has, at one time or another, seen a Pigfish member join in with
the fun.

While the singer sounds like The Stranglers' Hugh Cornwell being ravaged by a shoal of flying piranha fish, come 'Ride Your Ride,' the aggressive-sounding front is down and it's time to get genuinely poetic.

In fact, 'Ride Your Ride' is an incredible song, starting out with a dead-fast punk jolt before a sublimely bittersweet and acoustic- primed interlude startles the senses. The extraordinary song arrangement echoes the style of hardcore metal band PSP who use similar, breathtaking dynamics from hard-&-fast beginnings to slow-&-soulful mid-eights.

In their anti-corporate prime, these guys are passionately imbued with the spirit of Jet Plane Landing, before 'This Business' further impresses with a strong melody and sublime harmonies and while 'Days' starts out slowly, their over-riding love of heavy hardcore soon wipes that out. Still, 'MIR' - the final track of this, the band's debut LP - is atmospherically chilled to the sounds of some more clashing acoustic chords and compelling samples. A windfall like this is surely worth investing in. Steve Rudd 'Black Velvet' magazine.

An interesting one this, as Last Under The Sun attempt to straddle a fence somewhere between emo and hardcore. Something which must be uncomfortable, but when it works, it makes for a very interesting ride.

Unlike a lot of bands from those camps, they remember that writing a good song is the all important factor, and there's plenty of hummable melodies contained here, with "This Business" being the undoubted highlight.

The easiest link to make is to a pop oriented Fugazi, which makes more sense than you'd think. They've a fair bit of pedigree having worked their way through former members of Stepback, Eastfield, Eggraid, The Hot Tortoise, Pigfish and Damn Dirty Apes, before settling on their current 3 piece lineup.

They're going for a moody vibe, which they prefer to term melodic punk influenced post hardcore. However, it's far removed from anything else with the words 'melodic' and 'punk' attached which brings to mind the horrific image of Sum 41, and Last Under The Sun couldn't be further removed from that particular nightmare, with every song taking a distinct stance, separate, yet part of the same audio blast.

There is a lot to recommend this release, and with fresh recordings in the bag and a growing reputation for their live work, they could be ones to watch, especially with a bass player named after a
Hawkwind song! Review from: http://www.metaluk.com/reviews/viewReview.cfm?iReviewID=341

LAST UNDER THE SUN- 'WINDFALL' CD
Reason To Believe
I saw this band at the Cardigan Arms recently and they were fucking ace(they reminded me of MANIFESTO
JUKEBOX in terms of intensity - with a bit of LEATHERFACE and FOUR LETTER WORD thrown in.) This cd is really really fucking good - and on this they sound great - and like their own band ie not a clone of another band. Excellent coarse singing - great hooks and a furious sense of energy driving the whole thing. This is one of the best punk rock records I've heard recently from Britain (Birmingham). Go buy this now... (RPS)

LAST UNDER THE SUN- 'All Empires Crumble' CD
Positive Creed
This is a 4 song anti war/anti everything, speed punk stomp. Everything on here is a winner....a bass and rhythm section as tight as eberneezer scrooge and a guitarist with more about him than just thrashing away at chords. Song 2 "Bring me their heads" is an anarcho masterpiece as is the relentless "not in my name." Musically intriguing "last under the sun" also make use of samples, intercutting them to great effect. Had crass started out now in modern times, they might have ended up sounding a bit like this. Too short by half, this is nonetheless essential and extreme.

When Iraqi journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi heaved his two shoes at the head of President George W. Bush during a press conference in Baghdad, he did something that the White House press corps should have done years ago.

Al-Zaidi listened to Bush blather that the half-decade of war he had initiated with the illegal invasion of Iraq had been “necessary for US security, Iraqi stability (sic) and world peace” and something just snapped. The television correspondent, who had been kidnapped and held for a while last year by Shiite militants, pulled off a shoe and threw it at Bush—a serious insult in Iraqi culture—and shouted “This is a farewell kiss, you dog!”  When the first shoe missed its target, he grabbed a second shoe and heaved it too, causing the president to duck a second time as al-Zaidi shouted, “This is from the widows, the orphans, and those who were killed in Iraq!”

Last Under The Sun tour 2009 - gigs wanted

Last under The Sun rehearsals have been full steam ahead over the past few weeks and apart from new drummers and getting the back catalogue of "All Empires Crumble" and "Gone" back into shape the band have started work on all new material and there's about 3 new tunes on the go and a load more on the way.

It looks like there is the possibility of going to Europe in April 2009 with or without Police Bastard or Sensa Yuma so if you are a promoter, a venue or know anyone near you that may be able to help with a show all offers would be appreciated. the plan is to go to Germany for 12th April and then work through shows in Germany, France, Belgium, Czech, and any other countries who will have us to play. The band are also open to anyone who wants to help with a show in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland etc.

THE BAD SHEPHERDS ARE:

ADRIAN EDMONDSON (Vocals, ‘thrash mandolin’)
Ade is best known as a comedian in The Young Ones, Bottom, and The Comic Strip Presents. Though he’s no stranger to the music world having played the Monsters of Rock and Reading Festivals with Bad News, the Hootenanny with Jools Holland, Hyde Park with The Who, and he’s toured with The Bonzo Dog Doo-dah Band. He’s also had a No 1 single with Cliff Richard! And as a director he made lots of music videos in the 80’s for the likes of The Pogues, Squeeze, Elvis Costello and 10,000 Maniacs.

MAARTIN ALLCOCK (Twelve string guitar, bass, vocals)
Maartin is a multi-instrumentalist originally from Manchester, and is best known for playing guitar with Fairport Convention from ’85 to ’96, and for playing keyboards in Jethro Tull for four years. Maart has played on over 200 albums for people as diverse as Robert Plant, Cat Stevens, Beverley Craven, Judith Durham, Ralph McTell and Plaid Cymru president Dafydd Iwan! Besides the Bad Shepherds, Maart also currently plays for Swarb’s Lazarus and Beth Nielsen Chapman.

TROY DONOCKLEY (Uillean pipes, cittern, whistles, vocals)
Troy has built up a formidable reputation as both a Composer/Arranger/ Musician/Performer and as a leading virtuoso of the Uilleann Pipes. He’s released three critically acclaimed solo albums, is a member of Iona, and also finds time to record and tour with the likes of Maddy Prior (he has co-produced four albums), Barbara Dickson (produced two albums) Maire Brennan (Clannad), Midge Ure, Nightwish, Lesley Garrett , Roy Harper, Status Quo, Alan Stivell, Del Amitri and many more…

ANDY DINAN (Fiddle)
Andy won the All-Ireland Fiddle Championship… twice. He’s best known for playing with Toss the Feathers and Mike McGoldrick, but he’s also supported Dervish, Lunasa, Capercaillie and solo artists Martin Hayes and Liz Carroll. He recently performed at the Armagh Pipers club Festival with Mike and Ian Fletcher with a new project involving Portugese, Brazilian and Irish music.

MARK WOOLLEY (Bodhran, darabuka, cahon, whistles)
Mark has played percussion and whistles for many years with Dan Plews, Saul Rose and Guy Fletcher as part of English folk band Dansaul. He’s also shared stage and studio time with the likes of Jon Boden, Keith Hancock, The Family Mahone and Stefan Hannigan. He currently also plays with Full House. Though a brilliant player, the real reason he was invited to join the Bad Shepherds was because of his surname - ‘Woolley’.

HOW THE BAD SHEPHERDS CAME TO BE…
Adrian Edmondson was a teenager when punk arrived. The songs of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers were the soundtrack to his life through the late 70’s and early 80’s, and like a lot of people of his generation he was fond of playing these songs to himself at home on his acoustic guitar.

Cut forward to 2007: after a boozy pre-Christmas lunch in Soho, Ade stumbled along to Denmark Street, home of many alluring musical instrument shops, and whilst inebriated, ‘accidentally’ bought a mandolin. Surprised to see it sitting there in his kitchen the following morning he nevertheless picked it up, worked out a few chords, and started playing the same songs with a mandolin accompaniment – it sounded really interesting.

He was touring with the Bonzos at the time and he brought his mandolin along, and with Neil Innes on acoustic guitar, they had a go at London Calling in the dressing room. It sounded good, but Neil said ‘What you need are some brilliant folk musicians.’ Ade got in touch with Troy and Maart and they were both immediately up for it. As soon as he explained the idea to Troy: ‘Punk songs with a Celtic feel.’ Troy replied ‘Why not The Model by Krafwerk as well? I’ve always wanted to play that on the pipes.’ They met for a couple of days to mess about with the idea. If it didn’t work they could all just walk away. But within the first hour they knew they were onto something. In the two days they drank numerous beers, ate 2 curries and arranged 8 songs - and the band was born.

Rehearsals followed, and then, bizarrely, a trip to St Lucia to test it out (off season, cheap flights, cheap hotels, anonymity). They threw themselves in at the deep end and did 6 gigs in 6 days. Just little bars. But it got them up and running.

Then they got fucked over by their manager/promoter and had their tour cancelled, though with hindsight seems like a lucky escape (it’s not worth saying too much about him as he’s already been very quick to threaten legal action).

They regrouped, found a brilliant new fiddle player and a percussionist, and now they are touring during December, and looking forward to the festival season in 2009.

ALL AGENTS:Freak out the Normal Man,we want separation now!11 hours on the 11 bus on the 11 of november

The number 11 is Europe’s longest urban bus route and first came into existence in 1923.

It now follows the city’s outer ring road, the A4040 with some small deviations.

A full circuit takes 3hrs to complete, and the service carries 50,000 passengers each day. There are 272 bus stops.

40 buses are used each day - 20 for the ‘A’ and 20 for the ‘C”

On the eleventh of November our good friends at "Birmingham it's not shit" and a few others who can't be named here....are inviting anyone with an interest to spend eleven hours on the eleven bus starting at eleven am in “Birmingham: It’s Not Shit’s 11 11 11” (yes I know there’s four elevens there really, but even the alliteration starts to drag after a bit).

The rules are

    * Get on the 11C at 11am (or as near as dammit) on 11/11.
    * Get off the 11C at 10pm — 11 hours later — (or as near as dammit) on 11/11.
    * You can get on and off the bus as many times as you like (don’t spend more than 23 minutes off the bus).
    * Document your journey; photos, film, writing, cross-stitch, knitting, amigurumi, poetry, blog, twitter, however you like.
    * Meet up with others as mad as you, if you want.
    * Record everything — or on your own space and link us up.

The idea is that a snapshot of the real Birmingham from a number of different people will emerge, one that’s unedited, unspun, and unwashed. Circling the city will force the gaze inward, focussing our attention exclusively on our municipality. It’ll also freak out the drivers, the man on the clapham omnibus and others who normally expect passengers to have a destination in mind.

If it’s better to travel hopefully than arrive, Birmingham is the ideal place.

some context:  "The man on the Clapham omnibus " is a descriptive formulation of a reasonably educated and intelligent but non-specialist person — a reasonable man, a hypothetical person against whom a defendant's conduct might be judged in an English law civil action for negligence. This standard of care comparable to that which might be exercised by "the man on the Clapham omnibus" was first mentioned by Greer LJ in Hall v. Brooklands Auto-Racing Club (1933) 1 KB 205.

The first reported legal quotation of the phrase is in the case of McQuire v. Western Morning News[1] a libel case, in which Sir Richard Henn Collins MR attributes it to Lord Bowen, who had died nine years earlier.

It is derived from the phrase the bald-headed man at the back of the Clapham omnibus , coined by the 19th century journalist Walter Bagehot to describe the normal man of London , so used because Clapham in south London at the time was a non-descript commuter suburb and was seen to represent "ordinary" London. Omnibus is a now archaic expression for a public bus , but would have been common usage amongst the judiciary at the beginning of the 20th century.

It is time to separate from the Normal Man, It's time to separate from the Man on the Clapham Omnibus.

All Agents: This is Birmingham http://elevenbus.co.uk

.....and if you enjoy this sort of thing, you may want to also try this:

please pass this on.....

The Music Network Meeting Today at 4pm, 30th October 2008 at Birmingham TIC

The Music Network organises a NETWORKING EVENT on the last Thursday of each month, 4-6pm at The BCU Technology and Innovation Centre(TIC), Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham, B4 7XG. (directions/info tel: 08712 262725)

Today's meeting will be open to all.

Thursday 30th October 4pm til 6pm at The TIC, Birmingham.

The Birmingham branch of Musicians Union will be supplying luxury chocolate biscuits and good coffee for all. There’s food and drink afterwards supplied by the creative networks lot too. Come and talk about Music and Quantum Physics or what you’re up to and meet some new people, you know it may make sense.

The Music Network organises the meeting for the benefit of music related businesses in the West Midlands region. If you have news to report, a presentation to give, an event to promote, any new points for discussion, a pitch to make, business cards or flyers to hand round, an appeal for help, advice or guidance or even if you just want the free tea and biscuits and some quality entertainment…you are all invited. This post was brought to you without the use of the word "is"
